Portfolio Guidance
We want to help you create a unique portfolio that showcases your passion, skills, and individuality. If your goal is to apply to study a creative degree at a university such as Birmingham City University, your portfolio will also need to meet certain criteria.

This guidance document outlines what is required when preparing your portfolio for submission. If you decide to apply for BCUIC’s Art Foundation, the team will assess your portfolio against the criteria listed here.

Frequently Asked Questions
No, you do not need to submit a portfolio if you are looking to study any of the following jewellery/media degrees at BCU:
- BSc (Hons) Gemmology and Jewellery Studies
- BA (Hons) Horology
- BSc (Hons) Video Game Development
- BA (Hons) Media and Communication
- BA (Hons) Music Business
- BA (Hons) Media Production
When you submit your application via our online portal, there will be the option to upload supporting documents, such as qualifications, identification, and your portfolio.
We ask you to submit a digital portfolio (in JPEG or PDF format). Please avoid sending a physical copy of your portfolio – let alone the original – as this will be costly to send by mail and we cannot guarantee its safety, either in your country’s postal service or that of the UK.
Your portfolio should be made up of no more than 12 images. Please read our guidance document for further detail on your portfolio’s content.
